The trouble with technology afterthought

I help clients fix problems with their business tech. But many of those problems would not exist if they considered technology right from the start, as part of their original business strategy. Here’s why SMEs should reconsider everything…

Most SMEs and local businesses endure significant fallout from technology afterthought. They form grand business plans and develop winning strategies that look great on paper. Then, they adopt software and commit to systems to try and meet those goals.

This is what’s known as technology afterthought. And it often leads to major issues - which is great for me, as it’s my job to fix them. But it’s also a huge waste of time, resources, and effort for your SME.

So, my big question for today is: what would happen if technology was at the heart of your strategic development process?

Technology Afterthought and The IT Crowd

Do you remember The IT Crowd? It was a great sitcom that first aired on TV in the mid-2000s. It also - maybe - explains part of the reason why technology afterthought is still such a prevalent issue today.

If you haven’t seen it, The IT Crowd is about the working lives of three members of an IT department. The employees appear to be hidden away in a dingy, cluttered basement, although it’s later revealed that the office block they work in is a stunning example of modern architecture with every other employee in the building enjoying incredible views of London.

It is representative of the way we used to see traditional IT departments: a strange, detached world, often filled with nerdish people who struggle to relate to others; sometimes grumpy and almost always full of disdain for the computer illiterate. The show reveals some great insight into the way the IT department is still treated today: siloed, unrecognised, and undervalued.

While times have changed considerably, not every SME has caught up and technology is still an afterthought. In my view - and I appreciate I am tempting fate and possibly putting myself out of work - businesses should consider technology before developing their strategy for several compelling reasons:

Competitive advantage

By considering tech solutions early in the strategic development process, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and outperform competitors who are likely stuck in the past. Technology can provide a significant competitive edge - but you have to give it a seat at the planning table.

Efficiency and productivity

Adopt the right technology and you will benefit from streamlined processes, automation, and enhanced productivity, right from the very start. On the other hand, businesses that do not prioritise technology at an early stage will end up changing their strategy to fit the software.

Better customer experiences

Technology can enable seamless interactions. By considering software and systems as part of your strategy, you will be able to find, design or create digital solutions tailored to meet your customer’s needs, giving them personalised experiences and a perfect service.

Innovation and adaptability

Technology moves fast - but it also fosters innovation. Businesses that incorporate technology into their early strategy will adapt far quicker to changing market dynamics and emerging trends.

Risk mitigation and security

Working out potential tech challenges in the initial stages of setting up your business will significantly reduce risk. Everything from security breaches to compatibility issues can be addressed when technology is an integral part of your business strategy.

In summary, it’s not 2006 anymore, and The IT Crowd is not meant to be a role model. Ultimately, businesses that prioritise technology early in their strategic planning are better positioned for success. It’s really that simple…
